                     1860 - 2010 celebrating 150 years of Governors House.

THE GOVERNORS HOUSE, CAPE ROAD, WARWICK

The Governors House part of the former Warwick prison, now demolished and built over. This magnificent building was retained. The original building served as the home for the Governor of Warwick Prison. Following the closure of the prison the building has had a number of different uses including a Public House and is now home to Warwick Financial Solutions.

Warwick Prison was built  in 1860, to replace Warwick Gaol in Barrack Street,

The Prison was built on a site of 10 acres. A wall of blue engineering brick surrounded the site, with a frontage to Cape Road of approximately 875 feet. The main entrance was situated at the centre of the wall on Cape Road. To its left was the Governors House and to the right, built as a mirror was the Chaplain's House.

It closed for the reception of new prisoners in 1916, with the last visitors report being recorded in 1917. It was subsequently demolished in 1934, all that remains today is The Governors House (Pictured above).

The residential streets of Landor Road and Hanworth Road had been built on the site by 1938
.

The Prison was used to accomodate around 500 prisoners, and of comprised 309 cells, 4 day rooms and 2 yards for criminals, 43 sleeping rooms, 4 yards and 5 day rooms for debtors.
